I haven't purchased any renderer yet but i will need some basic product rendering in the future. Regarding rendering i'm totally with Ron. I have slowly tried some time but i think blender has a relatively high learning curve though i think it might be worth the learning as not only rendering possibilities are great but blender is one of the few tools that is able to edit stl files and help repairing or modifying them. I still don't know much about rendering, but I can open KeyShot, drop in a file, and get results with very little effort, and I don't worry too much about having forgotten how to use the program, as the interface is understandable.

And when I called or emailed with some questions they were extremely helpful- that support is worth a lot when I'm dealing with a software area in which I don't really know my way around. The interface was easy for me to understand, it worked right away with the files I needed it to.

KeyShot offered a full featured demo that I could plug my files into, and it gave me good enough results (I'm not going to be very critical) with almost no effort. The cost, even with a pretty good discount, was fairly high, but not as high to me as spending even a day or two learning something else. I'm not experienced in this area, and rendering is a very occasional need for me. At the time (this is still true) I had essentially no mental bandwidth to spare for learning or researching this kind of software. There may well have been other things out there, but they did not turn up in my searching. I bought KeyShot a few years back when I needed a render solution on the Mac that was easily accessible and that I could start using very quickly.
